A dock leveler is a hinged platform installed at the loading opening. It raises or lowers to meet the truck bed and places its lip onto the vehicle, creating a transition route for material-handling equipment. It compensates for normal differences between dock height and truck-bed height.

How a dock leveler operates

After the truck is correctly positioned and the dock is authorized for use, the platform rises, the lip extends or deploys, and the platform lowers until the lip is supported by the truck bed. During loading, the leveler follows normal vehicle-height changes within its operating range. The exact sequence depends on whether the system is hydraulic, mechanical or another approved design.

Capacity must be selected from more than the nominal load. Forklift axle load, wheel contact, load distribution, impact, frequency and platform dimensions all affect the application. A site-specific equipment schedule is required.

A dock shelter surrounds the rear of the truck when it reverses to the bay. It helps reduce rain, wind, dust, insects and conditioned-air loss through the space around the vehicle. It also improves working conditions for staff transferring goods between the truck and building.

Truck dimensions vary, so the shelter opening, projection and contact surfaces must suit the expected fleet. A design that is too narrow, too shallow or incompatible with vehicle geometry may seal poorly or wear prematurely.
