How to use the door designer

  1. Choose a garage door or a high-speed door.
  2. Enter the opening width and height in millimetres.
  3. Pick the model and colours. For garage doors you can use a standard colour or enter any RAL code, for the panels and for the full-view aluminium frame.
  4. Look at the door from outside and inside, and switch on the required installation space.
  5. Ask for a quote for that exact door, save an image, copy a link, or download the files for Revit and SketchUp.

How much space does a garage door need?

Approximate minimum space from OZ DOOR's standard design (standard-lift track, mounted inside the wall), in millimetres.

Opening W × HOpenerAbove openingEach sideDepth into the garage
2,500 × 2,200SOMMER centre motor3001253,558
5,000 × 2,500SOMMER centre motor3001253,558

8,000 × 3,000SOMMER GIGAsedo side motor400125 (motor side 337)3,366

Doors wider than 7 m use a side motor. With a centre motor the depth depends on the door height, because the opener rail is longer above 2.6 m.

How much space does a high-speed door need?

The standard high-speed door is face mounted. It needs 125 mm on the frame side, 350 mm on the motor side, 300 mm above the opening and about 340 mm out from the wall. The control box goes on the wall on the motor side, about 1.3 m above the floor.

The standard size goes up to 6 × 6 m. The servo motor is 0.75 kW below 10 m² and 1.5 kW from 10 m². The PVC curtain has 3 layers up to 3.5 m high and 4 layers above. Openings wider than 6 m use the Mega Door.

Sensors and options explained

Every OZ DOOR door has a photocell safety sensor as standard: an infrared beam across the frame. If a person or vehicle blocks it while the door is closing, the door stops and reopens. You can add the options below in the designer.

High-speed door

Radar BBC PrimeMotion C (both sides)
Microwave radar above the door. Opens the door when people or forklifts approach and can tell their direction. For indoor doors, mounted 2.2–3.5 m high.
Heavy-duty radar BBC Herkules 2E (both sides)
For outside openings and loading docks. Detects trucks, forklifts and people, mounted 2–7 m high, works in wind.
Floor loop detector
A wire loop cut into the floor detects forklifts and cars (metal), not people walking. Floor cutting is included.
Light curtain
Many beams up to 1.8–2.0 m high across the opening. It watches the whole height, which is safer than a single photocell.
Pneumatic safety edge
An air-filled edge on the curtain bottom. If it touches something the door stops and reopens at once, even if the photocell is blocked.
Pull switch (both sides)
An arm at the top beside the frame reaches about 1.5 m out from the wall, on both sides. The cord hangs down in the approach lane, so forklift drivers pull it to open the door without getting off.
Wireless wave switch
Wave a hand in front of it to open the door without touching anything. Good for clean rooms and food plants.
Safety posts (2)
Steel posts in front of both frames protect the frames and the motor box from forklift impact.

Garage door

Extra remote SOMMER Pearl Vibe
The remote vibrates when the motor has received the command. Range about 50–100 m, SOMloq2 encryption.
SOMweb app control
Open and close from your phone anywhere, and get a notice when the door was left open.
SOMtouch wireless wall button
A battery-powered touch button with no wiring, for inside the house or garage.
Backup power for power cuts
Centre motor: SOMMER battery keeps the door working in a power cut. Side motors use a UPS instead.

Free BIM files for architects and designers

The IFC4 file opens or links in Revit (Insert > Link IFC), ArchiCAD, Tekla and Navisworks. The DAE file imports into SketchUp with File > Import. Units are millimetres. The insertion point is the bottom-left corner of the opening on the wall face.

The file has separate parts: the door, the RHS 125×50 steel structure, the control box (high-speed door) and a transparent installation-space box. Model, size, colour and motor data are in the OZ_DOOR property set. The wall is not included.

Frequently asked questions

How much space above the opening does a garage door need?

A standard-lift track with a centre motor needs at least 300 mm. With a side motor (doors wider than 7 m) it needs 400 mm. If you have less, ask us about a low-headroom track.

How deep into the garage does the door go?

For doors up to 2.6 m high with a centre motor, about 3.6 m. Above 2.6 m, about 4.4 m. With a side motor, about the door height plus 0.37 m.

Which colours can I choose?

Standard panels come in white, dark grey and golden oak. Full-view doors have a black or white aluminium frame. You can also choose any RAL code for the panels or the frame; we confirm the details in the quote.

How accurate is the 3D model?

The outer sizes and installation space come from OZ DOOR's standard production designs. Use it for planning and design. Final sizes and details are confirmed after a site survey.

What is the largest high-speed door?

The standard model goes up to 6 × 6 m. Larger openings use the Mega Door.
